July 24th - an update

I have been seeing clients face to face for nearly two months now, and so far so good. The measures put into place have been working, and I am grateful to my clients who have attended sessions for their patience and understanding.

With the concerning news that Northampton may go into lockdown, and the introduction of compulsory face masks in shops, I felt it necessary to outline the situation regarding seeing me face to face.

Should a local lockdown occur, you will still be able to visit my office for face to face sessions. Mental health settings that provide counselling/therapy are exempt from government restrictions. Social distancing and hygiene measures are still required, but as long as the guidelines are followed, we will be OK.

Face masks are compulsory from today, and I am pleased to see people wearing in the local shops. Shops are a particularly difficult place due to the enclosed space. The doors close behind you, there are no open windows, the doors at the back are closed - you are in a box with little or no ventilation. If it is a food store, the temperature will lowered, which is the ideal environment for the virus. So a face mask here makes a great deal of sense.

If you struggle with wearing a face mask, practice with one on at home. Many people feel they can't breathe, but they are, all the time. Stress and anxiety often trick the mind into thinking you can't breathe because of physiological changes in the body, but you are still breathing. Try to focus on your surroundings, what you are buying in that shop. Think of a catchy song to keep you occupied - my go to is "White Horses" by Jacky (once in your head you won't be able to think of anything else). Remind yourself that you are safe, that you are in control of you. Breathe slowly and deeply.

You can wear a face mask to my office, but it isn't necessary. The office is well-ventilated, with the air being changed through windows at the back and front, which is the problem in shops - no ventilation.

I am also installing a new ventilation system for when the weather changes and it is harder to keep the windows open, but that's something for the Autumn.

If you have any queries, please let me know.

June 2nd

I have resumed seeing clients in person in my Kettering office.

I appreciate that many people are anxious about returning to whatever normality is now, so I am looking to make face to face sessions possible again, within the new norms of infection control.

I have made changes to keep my Kettering office Covid secure (please see photos). These measures include:

  • a hand sanitiser station at the bottom of the stairs
  • payment only by contactless card or online banking - no cash
  • safe distance within the office
  • no contact - handshakes etc
  • my old sofa replaced with chairs that can be cleaned easily
  • all surfaces in contact with clients wiped down after every session
  • easy access to tissues to avoid contact with box

In the meantime, I continue to see a number of clients via video or telephone, and will do so should people need to self-isolate, or feel that they do not wish to venture out just yet. Please see my page Video/telephone appointments for more details.

My online booking system is updated shortly with details of available appointments for both my Kettering office and video/telephone.

If you would like more information, or would like to arrange an appointment, please get in touch. You can call or message on 07972057309, or use the form on my Contact page.
